Teaching - (%) - Activities that generate Student Credit Hours, including Thesis and Research credits

Research and Scholarship - (%) - Expected of all Faculty

Advising - (%) - Both formal and informal, including advising of graduate students

Service - (%) - Activities in support of the University and its units, or the Profession. Expected of all Faculty. Usually 1-10%, depending on rank.

Extended Education - (%) - Professionally relevant interactions with the "public". Usually 1-5%; faculty with formal Extension responsibilities will show this category as their major effort.

EXAMPLE 1:

Everett Hansen is Professor of Botany and Plant Pathology with a 12 mo. appointment, tenured in the Botany and Plant Pathology Department. He has primary responsibilities in research, teaching, and advising. His appointment is supported 75% by the College of Forestry and 25% by the College of Science.

Specific duties include:

Scholarship and research (55%) in forest pathology and forest mycology.

Teaching (20%) including undergraduate and graduate courses in Forest Pathology.

Advising (10%) as Advisor in the undergraduate Biology Program, and advising of Graduate Students.

Extended Education (5%) including interactions with public and private forest land managers.

Service (10%) including responses to administrative demands, Departmental and University committees, and service to the profession through reviews and panels.

EXAMPLE 2:

Mary Powelson, Professor (with tenure)

 

This 12-month position, which is tenured in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, is 80% research with the Agricultural Experiment Station and 20% teaching with the College of Science.

TEACHING AND ADVISING: (30%)

Dr. Powelson is assigned to teach an annual course in plant pathology designed for undergraduate students majoring in programs in the College of Agricultural Sciences and College of Science. She is expected to participate in a team taught graduate course on management of plant diseases, which is offered on an alternate year basis. She will continue to serve as a major advisor of graduate students and will participate as minor professor or graduate school representative of graduate students, when appropriate.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP: (50%)

Dr. Powelson is expected to maintain a strong research program in the area of the biology and management of diseases of vegetables and potatoes. It is expected she will be involved in grantsmanship activities to obtain extramural funding in support of her research programs, will present papers at annual meetings of her professional societies, and will publish her research findings in peer reviewed journals and as reports/popular articles for the agricultural community. She is expected to establish collaborative working relationships with scientists within the department and in other departments at Oregon State University and at other universities in the United States.

SERVICE: (10%)

Dr. Powelson will be expected to serve on department, college and university committees, when asked and agreed to by her. She is also encouraged to participate in her professional societies by serving on boards, committees, departmental review teams, and accepting other assignments such as manuscript and grant reviews, and editorships, when appropriate.

EXTENDED EDUCATION: (10%)

Dr. Powelson will be expected to interact with the public and with private agricultural specialists, to present her research findings to the agricultural community via public lectures and written reports.
