| Grading Procedures | Exams will be based primarily on the material covered
in lecture but may also include material from the text when specific instructions,
either in lecture or recitation, are given to read a section of the text.
The lectures will closely follow the text so the text will serve as a
very useful resource.
There will be three examinations, two midterms and a final. Each examination will account for 25% of your grade. The remaining 25% of your grade will be based on your performance in the Recitation Section of the course. There will be no "make-up" exams. Excuse for lack of attendence at a scheduled examination requires that absence is due to a significant uncontrollable event as evaluated by the course instructors. If an examination is excused, the course grade will be determined by the average of the remaining examinations and performance in the Recitation Section. For Recitation, you will write ‘Take Home Messages,’ abstracts, of two of the previous three lectures. The purpose of these is to distill lectures into a conceptual take home message. Sorting through the information in a lecture and prioritizing the concepts and their relationships will help you develop a better understanding of the subject. An excellent Take Home Message will discuss the subject matter accurately and intelligently and be expressed logically and grammatically. Take Home Messages should be well-composed. There should be an introduction, a presentation of the key points in a logical sequence that is accurately described, and a concluding sentence that ties the package together. The Take Home Message must fit in a 3” x 7 ” area, be single-spaced, and employ 12 point font. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated in thsi class. For a definition of academic dishonesty, please see http://oregonstate.edu/admin/stucon/achon.htm |
